EQUINE PORTRAITURE: MINEA HILL

Steven Quon October 8, 2018

We went to a different location for Minea Hill and Elantra's photo shoot as I wanted to go into an area with a bit more direct light to work off a darker horse but we were still surrounded by trees. It was also later in the day so the lighting had changed quite a bit.

There was a mix, I took a couple in HDR, I also used a speed lite for a few photos as with a darker horse, I wanted to overexpose that background to make this mare Elantra pop from those trees.

Very nice touch with the red scarf Minea. :)

EQUINE PORTRAITURE: MYA HILL

Steven Quon October 7, 2018

I love kids and for the ones who love having their picture taken, there is probably not a single better thing than seeing their joy in going through the experience. Mya Hill and her pony Mowgli were such great sports. The snow was a challenge so we did most on bareback.

We first started off at the little creek by one of the bridges as the lighting was just incredible but we ended up moving to another location as it just wasn't a great spot to work from. A little too tight and too much snow.

I worked in tight corridors with Mya and Mowgli since this shoot was in the afternoon, it was super bright and sunny out so I took full advantage of all the trees around me to manipulate my lighting as to how I wanted it.

I had a good friend out with me to give me a hand, thank you Lisa Pitts for your help, you were awesome. :)

THE WEDDING CONNECTION

Steven Quon September 25, 2018

2018 has been a very busy year for weddings. But again it's weddings, what year isn't busy for couples getting married? So far this year I have been asked by 14 couples if I would photograph their wedding. I politely declined on every one of them. Why? It's not my field of work. That and it's not where my heart is at.

Having a REAL passion for the subjects that you shoot means everything. When you have that desire, it's amazing the lengths that you will go to, to get your end result. But when you don't have that love for what you shoot, it becomes a real struggle. Passion is king.

I am not one to just accept every job that comes my way. If I feel that I can't deliver nothing less than stellar work, then I will not do the job because I am up front with my clients and at the end of the day, I want to see them have the best product in their hands. After all, it's all about your client being blown away with the finished product.

As much as I would love to help everyone out and provide them my services, I know that as a photographer and videographer that it's a MUST to have your NICHE and your TARGET MARKET.

This would also be the reason why I declined on photographing the 2018 Miss Rodeo Canada Pageant Alumni a few months back, because studio portraits is not my specialty. It was years ago but I've stepped outside of the studio and straight into mother nature's light.

In terms of my videos, in the near future when you see me shoot straight documentaries, I will still be using many components of my studio equipment but in indoor settings like barns.

Now that brings me to my conclusion. Even though I will not photograph a wedding, my Equine Portraiture service still caters perfectly to married couples, and soon to be married couples in the horse world with life time photos with your horse(s).

ANNOUNCING EQUINE PORTRAITURE: LIFESTYLE!

Steven Quon August 22, 2018

My Equine Portraiture service has once again expanded, as I now offer THREE types of Equine Portraiture.

1) Equine Portraiture: Classic – With People
2) Equine Portraiture: Classic – Just Horses
3) Equine Portraiture: Lifestyle

The newest addition is “Equine Portraiture: Lifestyle”. This is for individuals who are looking for a mixture of classic portrait with them and their horse on the ground, as well as in the saddle. I added this type of portraiture because I have been getting inquiries to shoot riders for marketing material – publications, banners, magazines, websites, etc.

This was the exact type of photo shoot that I was asked to do for Tiffany Foster and as soon as I received that request, that is when I knew I had to add this type of portraiture into my list of services.

This type of photo shoot takes longer than a standard portraiture photo shoot would so they start off with 2 hour sessions and then work it’s way up.

Unfortunately the air (from the B.C fires) got too bad so we had to cut our session short, just as we started "in the saddle" shots. The air was really thick and foggy so I decided to work within close distances in this photo shoot. But regardless, it's a start to my Lifestyle Portraiture!

EQUINE PORTRAITURE: GRANT MACKINNON & the new Association

Steven Quon August 13, 2018

I have been very quiet for awhile. My apologies to Grant MacKinnon and the crew for the delay in getting this album up.

Grant MacKinnon and the Canadian Association of Equine Dental Practitioners.

I had these done awhile ago but I've had a very emotional past few days so I just needed some time to get myself back together and back on my feet. I will just leave it at that.

CANCELLED TIFFANY FOSTER PHOTOSHOOT

Steven Quon June 15, 2018

A couple nights ago I had an equestrian magazine publication from Spain get in touch with me asking if I would be available this upcoming Tuesday to do a lifestyle portraiture photoshoot at Spruce Meadows with two time Canadian Olympian and veteran of the Canadian Show Jumping Team, Tiffany Foster.

They had a tight deadline and very specific requirements that they need met and that they needed to count on me to get it done. I reassured them that not only have they contacted the right person to get the job done but that I would go above and beyond their expectations. So I said, "absolutely!", I do not let opportunities like this pass and I am incredibly honoured to have been chosen to do a photo shoot with such a highly regarded name in the world of showjumping.

Unfortunately, Tiffany will be heading back home next week and will not be at Spruce Meadows so we could not make our schedules work. However it's a small world out there and I am sure we will one day cross paths for other exciting opportunities.

Here are the photos that I got of Tiffany Foster at last weekends 'National'.

EQUINE PORTRAITURE SNAP & GO PHOTO SHOOT: KIM VOS

Steven Quon May 28, 2018

Here are the handful of photos from today. This was not a full photo shoot but instead a mini-session as I needed just 3 photos to incorporate into my first video marketing piece with Kim Vos and her mare Skylar, whom both did a fantastic job on camera today! :)

We shot this in the outdoor arena.

Just a reminder that my mini portraiture sessions, also known as "Snap & Go" mini portraiture sessions are bookable at any Equine Shows & Events that I am working at.
